According to the ISO 4217 standard, the Romanian leu is marked with the international code RON. The currency of Romania is officially used only in this country and is issued by the National Bank of Romania – Banca Natională a României.
Today's Romanian currency probably owes its name to the way money in circulation in what is now Romania was called in the 18th century. The Turkish piaster used at that time was referred to by the local population as "lion", "leu" in Romanian.
1 Romanian leu is divided into 100 bani. The Romanian currency includes coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 50 bani and banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 RON. Romanian leu coins have a standard design and feature the coat of arms of Romania. The banknotes are interesting because unlike most currencies, they are entirely polymer or plastic, which makes Romanian money really unique, even if not of great importance on the financial market. Romania has decided to replace paper money with plastic money as the second country in the world (after Australia). RON banknotes bear images of historical figures associated with Romania, mainly prominent artists.
The leu was introduced in Romania in 1867, i.e. before the liberation of the country from Turkish influence. During World War II, the leu was pegged to the German mark, and when the country was occupied by the Soviet Union, 1 RON equaled 100 rubles. In 1947, the second leu was introduced, followed five years later by the third. In 2005, the fourth Romanian leu was created, which remains in circulation to this day.
The leu is the currency of a country mainly associated with the story of Dracula, is of interest to tourists, mainly. Therefore, a way to exchange RON for PLN is sought mainly during the holiday season. The RON PLN pair is not easy to find in Polish exchange offices, but online exchange is not a problem. The exchange rate of the Romanian leu in relation to PLN oscillates around PLN 0,88.
The RON currency is also important for Poles in the business sphere. Due to the fact that we have more developed trade relations with Romania than it might seem, the exchange rate of the leu is quite important to us. The exchange mainly involves machinery and means of transport, so the exchange rate of the Romanian leu at the time of the transaction is important. In addition, the Romanian market has potential, which is why the RON exchange rate may arouse more and more interest among European investors over time.
Romanian banknotes made of plastic are characterised by special durability – they cannot be torn, they are also resistant to moisture and rain.
Romania in 1917 released the smallest banknote in the world (10 bani), entered in the Guinness Book of Records. The banknote measures 2,75 cm by 3,8 cm.
In 2003, a 1000000 lei note was issued. It is no longer in circulation today, because shortly after its issue, Romania decided to redenominate the currency.
