According to the ISO 4217 standard, the currency of Australia has the AUD code. It is worth mentioning that the Australian dollar uses the same symbol as its American counterpart, but it is preceded by the letters a or AU. Investors interested in the AUD exchange rate refer to it as the “Aussie dollar” or “Aussie”.
Key information about the Australian dollar
The currency of Australia is officially used throughout the Commonwealth of Australia, i.e. on the continent itself, on the islands of Tasmania, Norfolk, Christmas, Coconut, Heard and McDonald Islands, Ashmore and Cartier Islands. The AUD is also the official currency in the surrounding island states, i.e. Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu. It is worth noting, however, that the Australian dollar is not only the key currency for Oceania, but also one of the most important in the world. The importance of the exchange rate of the Australian dollar at a given moment is underscored by the fact that its homeland is one of the largest financial centres. As for the exchange rate, the Australian dollar belongs to a fairly narrow group of so-called commodity currencies, i.e. currencies strongly linked to commodity prices.
1 Australian dollar is divided into 100 cents, which are denoted with the "c" or "¢" symbol. In addition to cents, there are also denominations of AUD 1 and AUD 2 in coins. On the obverse, there is a portrait of the British Queen Elizabeth II, but there are also natural motifs, such as the kangaroo or the platypus. The banknotes come in the denominations of AUD 5, AUD 10, AUD 20, AUD 50 and AUD 100, and feature portraits of Australia's distinguished figures. The AUD currency was the first in the world to be produced on a polymer substrate, and its additional security feature is a transparent window with a holographic image.
AUD – the currency that replaced the Australian pound
Australian dollars entered circulation in 1966, replacing pounds, shillings and pence. The tenure of Australia's newest currency is therefore short. The history of the predecessors of the Australian dollar is quite interesting. In 1909, eight years after the unification of the Australian colonies, the Australian pound, modelled on its British counterpart, was introduced into circulation. It was officially used for several decades, even after the country gained independence. It wasn't until the early 1960s that a new currency called the Australian dollar was created.
The AU$ currency is valued in the financial world, so its exchange rate is the subject of many analyses. What influences how much the Australian dollar is worth at any given time? The AUD exchange rate is related primarily to the state of the commodity market. The price of the Australian dollar depends in particular on the value of gold and coal, as well as other commodities exported by Australia. As for the AUD PLN pair, it is not particularly popular. There are relatively many Poles living in the Antipodes, but many of them emigrated years ago, so they watch the AUD/PLN rate on special occasions rather than on a daily basis. The conversion rate of the Australian dollar at a given moment is of interest to those who support a family left in their homeland or pay off loans in the country. The PLN AUD pair is most often exchanged by those who do not see Australia as their immigration destination but a great adventure and dream vacation.
