Egyptian pound

The Egyptian pound is the official currency of the Arab Republic of Egypt. According to the ISO 4217 standard, it is referred to by the abbreviation EGP, although the symbol "E£" is also sometimes used.1 pound is divided into 100 piastres and 1,000 millimes.

The Egyptian pound - what you need to know

The Egyptian pound in coin form comes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 piastres and £1. The system for issuing them is very simple - the lower the denomination, the smaller the size of the coin. Egypt also has banknotes of 25 and 50 piastres and £1, £5, £10, £20, £50, £100 and £200. The banknotes depict important Egyptian buildings, such as the Abu Simbel Temple (1 EGP), the Ibn Tuluna Mosque in Cairo (5 EGP) or the well-known Sphinx of Giza (100 EGP). On other banknotes, we can see historical figures such as the former Egyptian ruler Chephren, protected by the sky god Horus (10 EGP), or Ramses III rushing towards battle on his chariot (20 EGP). All Egyptian banknotes are bilingual - you will find all the information on them in Arabic and English. As with coins - the larger the denomination, the larger the banknote. Egyptian pounds are also the unofficial currency in the Gaza Strip.

Egyptian pounds - the history of the currency of the pharaohs

The Egyptian pound saw its premiere in 1834. A decree was issued at the time for the adoption of a new Egyptian currency. It replaced the previously functioning piastur. At the time, the new currency in Egypt functioned only in the form of coins. The National Bank of Egypt issued the first banknote on 3 April 1899. It featured an image of two camels in the desert. In 1914, Sultan Hussein Kamil decided to start printing EGPs at the British mint. In this way, the Egyptians were freed from Ottoman control. In 1924, two years after Egypt's independence, King Fuad I presented new banknotes that depicted the image of a camel. The next two years brought another change. In 1926, the first Egyptian pound with a watermark was introduced into circulation. The next major change came in the early 1950s, when King Faruk I decided that his image should appear on the banknotes. However, this idea was abandoned a short while later and in 1952, the image of the pharaoh Tutankhamun appeared on the banknotes. The current design of the EGP was approved in 1979. This means that the Egyptian currency has not undergone any visual changes since that date.

Interesting facts about the Egyptian pound

  • In colloquial speech, the different values of the EGP have their own unique names, e.g. 1 Egyptian pound is "bolbol", meaning nightingale, and 1,000,000 Egyptian pounds is "arnab", meaning rabbit.

  • Egypt is one of the few countries to have introduced polymer banknotes. As of July 2022, EGP 10 and EGP 20 banknotes made of this material have been in circulation. It is expected to make the money more durable and harder to counterfeit.

  • Egyptian pounds were used in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan from 1899 to 1956 and in Cyrenaica from 1942 to 1951 (currently Libya, then occupied by the UK).
